More Chrome gotchas
I’m having a harder and harder time liking Chrome at the moment. I dislike what Firefox has become, and the Chrome sync stuff has been sublimely useful for traveling between devices.
But god damn if it doesn’t piss me off sometimes. We’re blocking outbound HTTP connections that don’t originate from the proxy here, but Chrome keeps taking it upon itself to mark the proxy as bad every so often, and I can’t figure out why. There doesn’t appear to be an option to disable that behavior either. Nothing to do but head into the hidden net-internals menu and clear it.
Then I noticed the Chrome on my phone acting up, but the stock Android browser working fine. Our proxy isn’t marked bad there, what’s going on? Turns out that the “save bandwidth” feature uses a Google proxy, can’t be proxied itself, and when Chrome marks that proxy as bad it doesn’t fall back to the system proxy, it falls back to “DIRECT”.
