1-coin clear: Metal Slug
Metal Slug is one of my favourite games ever, and since the cartridges are expensive I wanted to make them last, so I resolved that I would not buy the next one until I managed a one-coin clear of the current one. Quite a lofty goal, considering I absolutely suck at arcade games, by virtue of simply never really getting to play them terribly often as a kid.
A couple weeks ago, I was getting what I thought was fairly far through the final stage with continues turned off, so I decided to start consciously shooting for that 1CC. I decided that one of the better ways to do this would be to turn continues on, and then crank the difficulty up. This increases the speed of bullets, the HP of enemies, and - I think - increases the number of enemies slightly. I figured that if I could get down to clearing the entire game with only a few continues on the hardest difficulty, dropping it back to default difficulty might make it attainable.
It didn’t quite work out that easy, but it did eventually pay off, as a couple of days ago I cleared difficulty 8 with only a single continue (and that was close to being a 1-coin clear due to an absolute sweetheart of a run on the final mission). So on Sunday I dropped the difficulty back, dropped a coin into it and went on my way, getting the clear on my last life and my 10th best high-score. Hooray!
So now I just have to keep an eye out for one of the other games that’s cheap enough for me to buy it, and I also need to decide if I want to do Metal Slug 2 with the turbo patch or without it, as I hear it’s pretty miserable without.
